Covering an area of 9.6 square miles, the suburb of Chicago Heights is located in Cook County, 30 miles south of downtown Chicago, adjacent to the Indiana state line. The home of Prairie State College, it was the earliest of the steel-producing communities in the Chicago area, and got its name because of its proximity to Chicago and its elevation, which averages 95 feet above the surrounding area. The population of Chicago Heights is 32,776, according to 2000 U.S. Census figures. Homes are very reasonably priced.
Mayor Anthony Deluca states in his message to village residents, "This administration has held the line on taxes while other Southland communities have increased taxes." In addition to holding the line on taxes, Chicago Heights has an excellent school system.
There are more than one-half dozen public elementary schools within the village. High school students attend either Bloom High School on 10th Street, Bloom Trail High School on Cottage Grove, or District 206 Alternative High School on 10th Street.
The town's public library is another asset to the community. Located on 15th Street, it has more than 133,000 items, and has a reciprocal agreement with the Chicago Public Library system; in addition to taking out materials from the Chicago Heights library, residents can also borrow items from any Chicago Public Library location. The Bethel Community Center on Portland Avenue opened nearly 30 years ago. The 25,000-square-foot facility features a gymnasium, banquet hall, performing arts room, cafeteria, daycare center, restaurant-sized kitchen, classrooms and a computer lab, a barber shop, pharmacy, and a medical clinic. « Show less
