Enjoy the outdoors in Richmond
Anyone looking at homes for sale in Richmond is in for a treat if he or she appreciates the great outdoors. Although Richmond is a metropolitan area and the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, it's called the River City for a reason. A variety of recreational activities can be enjoyed along the James River, and there are also beautiful parks throughout the city and annual outdoor events.
The James River extends almost the entire length of the state from its rising point at the Allegheny Mountains in the west, and empties into the Chesapeake Bay in Hampton Roads. Richmond is lucky to have it pass through the city where it is wide enough to allow abundant recreational opportunities.
Once you have settled into your new home, explore the natural area by walking or mountain biking the many local trails. A favorite spot among locals for swimming is Pony Pasture Rapids, located on the south bank of the river downstream from Huguenot Bridge at 7200 Riverside Drive. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing are also available here.
When you want to have a relaxing picnic with family and friends, head over to Maymont Park at 1700 Hampton Street for the easiest access to Maymont Mansion and other attractions. This is a 100-acre American estate with a children's farm, wildlife exhibit, waterfall, an herb garden and two others gardens featuring Italian and Japanese plants. Finally, don't miss out on outdoor events such as the Annual Watermelon Festival, which takes place every August in Carytown.
