Transit-friendly suburbs of Chicago
A recent study conducted by DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development identified the top 20 suburban towns of Chicago that are the "transit-friendliest," The Chicago Tribune reported. At the top of the list are the suburbs of La Grange, Wilmette and Arlington Heights. Those who are considering real estate in Chicago but are more partial to suburban living can look to some of these locations that will provide easy access to the urban center.
One of the authors of the report, Joseph Schwieterman, told the Tribune, "People want an alternative to the automobile. Suburbs are going to great lengths to make their downtowns transit hubs."
Taking a look at La Grange specifically, the suburb offers convenient access to the Metra commuter rail. The La Grange Road Metra station is located in the middle of a thriving commercialized area, within walking distance of many restaurants, cafes, shops and drugstores. The Village of La Grange website even offers a "Bike to Metra Guide" in an effort to help commuters select bikes, find safe routes and secure bikes at the Metra station. The guide says that some of the benefits that come with biking to the Metra are reducing stress, saving money on transportation costs and getting physical activity.
