2008 ABCs Accountability Program

North Carolina uses the ABCs designations to show how well schools are performing against the state standards. The ABCs designations are based on the percentage of students who tested at or above grade level on state standardized tests and whether students made the amount of growth expected in one year. For high schools, graduation-related factors are also included. Schools receive one of the following designations: High Growth, Expected Growth, No Recognition, Priority School or Low-Performing. Schools that meet or exceed the state's growth goals can earn the following additional designations for commendable performance: Honor School of Excellence, School of Excellence, School of Distinction or School of Progress.
2010 Adequate Yearly Progress

NCLB requires that each school be evaluated with respect to making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). In order for a school to make AYP, each student subgroup (School as a whole; American Indian; Asian; Black; Hispanic; Multi-Racial; White; Economically Disadvantaged; Limited English Proficient, and Students with Disabilities) must have at least a 95% participation rate in the statewide assessments. Each subgroup must meet or exceed the State’s percent proficiency targets in reading and in mathematics (annual measurable objectives). In addition, the school as a whole must show progress on the other academic indicator, which is either attendance or graduation rate (depending on the grade configuration of the school).
2012 End of Grade Tests (EOG)

In 2011-2012 North Carolina used End-of-Grade (EOG) tests to assess students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 in reading and math, and grades 5, 8, and 10 in science. The EOG is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of North Carolina. Students must pass the grade 8 EOG test in order to graduate from high school. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level on the tests.
