Dover, an affluent rural residential suburb 16 miles southwest of Boston was ranked the number one healthiest town in the state by Boston Magazine. First settled as agricultural land in the 1640's, Dover only saw modest industrial activity after the damming of the Charles River in the late 18th century. Dover instead remained a community of large estates and later, residential homes. The town, incorporated in 1836 has roughly 6000 people spread out over 15 square miles.
A large percent of undeveloped woodland has left the rural character of this town without major intersecting highways. Instead, a network of connecting roads links Dover with Interstate 95 and state Routes 135 and 109. This provides Dover residents with access to the high tech industry corridor along Route 128. There are a number of commuter rail stations to Boston's North and South Stations in neighboring Needham.
Dover is bordered by Medfield and Walpole on the south; Sherborn on the west; Natick on the northwest; Needham and Wellesley on the north; and by Westwood on the east. With its own nationally recognized town library, Dover shares a regional school district with nearby Sherborn. Three of the district's four schools, however, are located conveniently in Dover: one elementary school, the middle school and the high school. A second elementary school is in Sherborn.
The local town government consists of open town meetings and a board of selectmen. The business of running this charming, typically New England town is conducted in a handsome town hall constructed of brick with arched atrium windows and a clock tower cupola. Architecture elsewhere in town adds to the community's character.
Expansive old colonial farmhouses are available, as are more newly constructed homes and condominiums. In July 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Dover, MA was $1,708,375. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
