Joppatowne, which also refers to the residential and commercial district, is populated with planned communities, shopping centers, and businesses, while Joppa is a designated rural area complete with lush green pastures and picturesque rolling hills. A public park with hiking and biking trails, recreational fields, and picnic areas is also being planned for Joppa.

Originally a port on the Gunpowder River, famed for it's mile wide harbor, Joppatowne was a thriving trading post for tobacco during early American history. However, after Baltimore and Annapolis established themselves as major ports, Joppatowne became primarily a farming community. Then in 1961, as more and more Marylanders relocated from Baltimore City, Joppatowne was developed into a bustling suburb.

With close access to I-95, Joppatowne is easily accessible to White Marsh and Baltimore, but with the continued growth of nearby Bel Air, many residents to not have to look far for professional and recreational opportunities.

Joppatowne is part of the well respected Harford County School System. It's strong schools continue to perform highly on standardized tests and Joppatowne High School features the state's only magnet program in Homeland Security and Government Intelligence.
