Webster is a medium size community of 12,000 residents in central Massachusetts on the Connecticut border. This location places Webster within commuting distance of three major New England cities; Worcester is 18 miles north; Boston is 56 miles east and Providence, Rhode Island is 33 miles south. Founded by Samuel Slater in 1812, Webster was largely an industrial center of mills powered by its abundant water supply. This 1442 acre body of water with the longest place name in America is commonly called Lake Webster and is protected by the Webster Lake Association. Water activities along this pristine, five-mile-long lake include fishing, waterskiing, swimming, boating and sailing. Additionally, there are over eight hundred homes along its shores.
Also located on its shores is the well-known "Indian Ranch", the New England home of Country Music which for many years has attracted visitors to Webster from all over the region. Webster is well-served by schools. There are two public elementary schools and the Bartlett Junior-Senior High School located within the town. Also, Webster has three more private elementary schools that provide pre-kindergarten to grade eight education.
Although there is no rail service in Webster, the town is a member of the Worcester Regional Transportation Authority with regular bus routes to the surrounding communities of Auburn, Oxford and Worcester. The highways through Webster include Routes 12 and 16 and Interstate 395. Other major interstates are easily accessible through neighboring towns.
