Historic Newburyport is a picturesque seaport town marked by a revitalized downtown area of brick sidewalks, monuments and federalist architecture. Downtown Newburyport attracts tourists with its retail activity of shops, restaurants, and galleries as well as by its famous theater, located in the old firehouse. Antique hunters can enjoy browsing through town or visit a large indoor and outdoor year-long furniture market at the waterfront.

Newburyport's fine high style architecture recalls its history as a town where well-to-do sea captains and shipbuilders lived. The city's rich tradition of whaling is reflected in maritime souvenirs on sale in almost every store. The town holds the distinction as the birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard because the first commissioned ship, a frigate, The U.S.S. Massachusetts was built in Newburyport.

Newburyport has a variety of available arts and recreation. The Newburyport Arts Association sponsors exhibits and lectures and the Firehouse Center for the Arts features music, dance and theater performances in its 195 seat Arakelian Theater. Below, the theater which is located at One Market Square, is a restaurant.

Adjacent to Newburyport is the popular beach community of Plum Island. Restaurants, night spots and summer cottages line the island's main street and charter planes at the airport offer aerial tours above the spectacular landscape of beach, marsh and rocky coast.

Newburyport is conveniently located 30 miles north of Boston with several main highways linking the town to communities on the North Shore and Merrimack Valley. Interstate 95 and Routes 1 and 110 are nearby and the town is at the end of the Newburyport commuter rail line from North Station, Boston. At the edges of town Newburyport has its own industrial activity. A recently developed industrial park houses diversified industries that help the local economy thrive.
