Seekonk is a suburban community on the Massachusetts border with Rhode Island. The town, incorporated in 1812, has gone through territory changes. Initially formed in the 1600's from the western half of Rehoboth, Seekonk's borders changed again in 1862 when East Providence, Rhode Island was incorporated and took two thirds of the land and population from Seekonk. The town is still closely linked with Providence's metropolitan area by serving largely as a bedroom community for the Rhode Island capital which is 4 miles west.

Seekonk consists of rolling hills and marshy land in the central portion of town. Growth halted in the late 17th century during the upheaval of King Phillip's War when much of the colonial population of the town fled north for protection in garrison buildings. Even afterward, Seekonk did not see rapid development, but modest growth with limited industry. The industry that did develop in Seekonk was later taken by East Providence. Two industrial villages developed to supplement the early agricultural economy, with such businesses as the Rumford Chemical Works. Later in the 20th century, the Kent Manufacturing Company produced tennis racquets and croquet sets on the upper reaches of the Tenmile River.

Today, Seekonk remains primarily pastoral and agricultural. Residents here can enjoy the open space and commute the short distance to Providence or other nearby communities for cultural and economic opportunity. These surrounding towns include: Pawtucket, East Providence, Rehoboth and Swansea. Seekonk's 13,000 residents live spread out over 18 square miles of town and have a variety of local services. Seekonk's school district consists of three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Other basic services such as public works, recycling and a public library are also provided by the town. Homes in Seekonk are traditional cape, colonial and more contemporary ranch styles.
