Rehoboth is a long standing community in southeastern Massachusetts in Bristol County between Boston, Cape Cod and the State of Rhode Island. This historic pastoral community has a wealth of open space and has a population of only 10,000 residents living spread out over 48 square miles. Much of the land is marshy terrain that never supported large-scale agriculture, but provided a source of bog iron that was refined at early forge operations.
The first permanent settlement in the mid-1600's attracted residents drawn to rich fishing resources along the Palmer River and an annual herring run that provided an abundant food source. By 1704 there was an iron forge in town and by 1714 the Goff Inn catered to travelers coming through on the stage to Taunton, Providence or Newport, Rhode Island. Sawmills were established in 1747 and in 1809 cotton yarn mills at Rehoboth Center began operating. Dozens of antique colonial and Federal style homes preserve this historic character of the community.
Today, Rehoboth features a significant amount of protected conservation land at the Shad Factory Conservation Area on Reed Street., the Miller Bird Sanctuary on Lake and Winter Streets, the Fox Farm Conservation Area on River Street. There are several private riding stables in the town and the Pawtucket Boys Club operates Camp Ramsbottom on Route 44. A privately run summer recreation program is offered to town youth for four weeks in the summer.
