With a population of a little over 45,000, Madera, located in the Central Valley, offers residents a number of benefits. First, with a close proximity to Fresno- the city offers the convenience of urban living, with none of the drawbacks. A small, but prosperous town, Madera’s affordable homes and small town atmosphere ensure that residents never want for more. Expansive farms offer residents the opportunity to foster their agricultural tendencies.

Custom built homes are numerous, as well as ranch homes and Mansionettes. Second, the city retains a certain small town atmosphere conducive to an outstanding quality of life. The downtown area reveals vibrant, colorful storefronts. An eclectic mixture of shops proudly boasts the area’s ethnic and cultural diversity. Each year, the city’s good natured attitude is apparent at the “Old Timers Celebration.” The committee for the event reviews the nominations of candidates older than fifty years; the best of the nominations are crowned King and Queen of Old Timer’s Day.

Indicative of the friendly and amiable people in Madera, the celebration brings the annual sending out of the Whiskerino Posse, a group of city residents who are sent out in the community the week of the celebration to find unbearded men. Those without “whiskers” or the five dollar “stay out of jail” buttons are thrown in a makeshift jail and required to “bail” out; all the sales from the buttons and bail go to support the local historical society. The celebration continues throughout the week; picnics hosted by the city and by a local law firm show community spirit and togetherness.

The twenty schools within Madera are overseen by the Madera Unified School District. The district was proud when one of the schools within the district, Dixieland School, was named as a California Distinguished Elementary School. A community college and nearby California State University, Fresno and University of California, Merced ensure a number of educational opportunities for Madera’s youth.

Located in Madera County, the area is the fourteenth largest in the state for overall agricultural production. Almonds grapes, poultries, plums, and nectarines are among some of the area’s largest crops. A number of other commodities have a production home in Madera County: honey, orchids, timber and Christmas trees.

Dining and entertainment options are numerous. Among locals, The Vineyard Restaurant remains a favorite. Owned by a family that’s been in the business since the early 1900s, the restaurant’s house-aged steaks, wine and fresh baked bread make it a popular choice for tourists and residents alike. The city also houses one of the Valley’s most popular chains of Mexican restaurants, Sal’s.

In June 2008, the average price of a single family home or condo in Madera was $211,080. This information is gathered from MLS sources, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.
