Burlington benefited greatly as a residential and industrial center with the construction of Interstate 95/128 that passes through town. For most of its history since its incorporation in 1799, Burlington was a sparsely populated agricultural community with light trade. The population and development boomed loudly in the 1950's and 1960's and the town grew rapidly. Burlington is 13 miles northwest of Boston and its neighboring communities are Bedford to the west; Billerica to the northwest; Wilmington to the southeast; and Woburn to the south. The area along Route 95/ 128 is teeming with industrial parks, office complexes, large retailers and hotels.
The Burlington Mall, a typical suburban indoor galleria has become a destination for those from surrounding and even distant towns. This commercial activity and the high tech belt further south along the highway provide easy access to jobs for Burlington residents. Additional roads leading through the town are Routes 3, 3A and 62. The commuter rail to Boston is accessible in neighboring Woburn.
The Town of Burlington maintains numerous athletic fields, conservation land and parks for its residents. Among the parks is the bandstand on Cambridge and Summer Streets where concerts and open air movies are offered in the summer. Within the Burlington School District are four elementary schools, one middle school and a high school. Additionally, as part of a regional school district, students may elect to attend Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical High School in nearby Billerica.
