Medway is an attractive residential community in the southwestern suburbs, just 25 miles from Boston. Its strategic location also places it within easy commuting to Worcester, 24 miles to the northwest and to Providence, Rhode Island, 30 miles south. With access to Route 495, Medway is an ideal place to live for anyone who wants to settle in a tucked away town while staying connected to the rest of the region.
Medway is clearly a family-oriented community where single-family houses predominate. Even so, there are also condo/townhouse units available. Settlement of Medway began around 1700 when the first residents, Henry and Sarah Gamsey built their home. A decade later, after other families had moved into the area and formed a community, the town was officially incorporated. The town's riverside location spurred industrial growth with saw, grist, textile and paper mills. Further industrial development came by the middle of the 19th century when railroads extended through Medway.
Today, the community continues as a promising place of commercial and residential growth due in part to proximity to Interstate 495 and other principal roads, Routes 109 and 126. However, Medway is a community of homes where approximately 10,000 residents live spread out over 11 square miles of town. The town government is typical of other small New England communities and is run by open town meeting and by a board of selectmen.
Medway offers a full array of municipal services including water, sewer, police, fire and emergency response. The parks department oversees a number of open-spaces for recreation where young people as well as adults can enjoy several athletic leagues and organizations. Civic involvement is active in Medway where many residents also participate in the Friends of the Library, park fundraising, Newcomers Club and the Medway Cultural Council. Medway's local school district consists of elementary education at the Burke-Memorial and McGovern schools, and at a local middle and high school.
Lot sizes are often generous and home styles are largely traditional colonials. Additionally, condo units from the modest to the luxurious are available. In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Medway, MA was $351,475. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
