Norwell is a suburban South Shore community that lies 20 miles south of Boston in Plymouth County. Norwell is a town to be appreciated for its historic and scenic beauty. The North River runs along Norwell's border and within the town, at Norwell Center, there is a handsome historic district, comprising many antique homes, open fields and a charming Town Common.

Norwell has gone through several name changes and its land has been part of surrounding towns since it was first settled in 1636. At that time, it was part of Scituate. Later in the mid-19th century, it was called South Scituate before becoming incorporated as an independent town in 1888. Early colonists farmed the area and the town's agricultural base eventually shifted to shipbuilding, taking advantage of its riverside location and proximity to the Atlantic shore.

Through the 18th and 19th centuries, Norwell was a well-noted producer of fine frigates, schooners and merchant vessels. Norwell saw its greatest growth during the years following the Second World War. Residential development of suburban subdivisions doubled the town's population between 1950 and 1955.

Presently, Norwell is an affluent suburban town where its 10,000 residents enjoy a vibrant community of schools, commercial businesses, churches, libraries, health facilities, and two large business parks. Executives who make up a significant percent of Norwell's population have an easy commute to work at many of the businesses located at these office and industrial parks. Active and passive recreation opportunities are available at a wildlife preserve and at other open spaces.

Other facilities include: Valley Swamp Conservation Land, Stetson Meadows Conservation Land, Albert F. Norris Reservation, Black Pond Natural Preserve, North River Salt Marsh, Cuffey Hill Reservation, Miller Woods and the Donovan Property. The town's recreation department also sponsors a wide variety of youth and adult activities in sports, fitness and crafts.
