Littleton is a historic and picturesque residential community lying on the outer edge of the suburbs, 26 miles west of Boston. Settled in the early 1700's, Littleton began as an upland farming community of abundant apple orchards. Eventually, the town became known for its cider production and soon expanded to vinegar making. Littleton later became the site of the modern Very Fine Apple Products plant. In addition to this industry, there was brick making that started when clay deposits were found near the railroad depot. Evidence of this product's impact on the area may be seen in the use of bricks in local farmhouses that remain in Littleton from the early part of the 20th century.
Known as a hub for manufacturing, Littleton has been attracting businesses since the 1940s. Herpys Dairy, Ice Cream Service and Swimming Pool were on Great Road, built up through the 1940's and 1950's on former farmland east of Littleton Common. The McElroy Manufacturing Corporation, fabricator of high-speed, automatic radio telegraph assemblies, moved to Littleton from Boston after World War II.
Littleton, committed to open space and recreation, has many amenities such as hiking trails, and nature preserves, athletic field and golf. There is a beach and children's playground at Long Lake and a wide green lawn with benches at the Littleton Common. Trees and grass abound in this serene community where strict building codes are enforced to ensure the integrity of the surrounding countryside and wealth of preserved antique homes.
Nevertheless, new homes are built in this area in the traditional styles of the community's rich architectural heritage. Littleton covering approximately 17 square miles is surrounded by similar rural suburban communities including Acton, Ayer, Boxborough, Groton, Harvard, and Westford.
