Billerica, incorporated as a town in 1655, lies 20 miles northwest of Boston and is bordered by the City of Lowell to the south. Billerica began its history as an agricultural community and even today, large swaths of undeveloped land have allowed the town to retain its rural character. The two rivers, the Concord and the Shawsheen that run through Billerica gave growth to mill industry.
Today however, Billerica is a major regional employer in the high tech industry. Another major employer of the town is the Middlesex County House of Corrections. Billerica is accessible by Route 3 and Interstate 495, a major beltway in Massachusetts. Additionally, public transportation is provided by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority and the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Commuter rail service to Boston is available in North Billerica.
Most houses for the 40,000 residents of Billerica have been constructed since the 1950's in residential subdivisions, but a significant amount of older homes exist in the neighborhoods, Pinehurst, Nutting Lake, North Billerica and around the town center. Residential architecture here reflects the town's long history. Among the colonial, federal and gothic revival homes are several well-maintained historic home sites including the homes of prominent citizens of the town's past.
Additionally there are a number of monuments such as the Civil War Memorial, the town common with its wide lawn centered by a gazebo, and some historic churches such as the First Unitarian Church where Ralph Waldo Emerson once preached. The school district is served by a regional vocational high school, as well as by six local public elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school. The schools benefit from collaboration with local businesses and have been recognized for outstanding programs.
