The town of Auburn, with its low hills and valleys began as a settlement of farms in colonial times and these farms and small towns merged to form the South Parish of Worcester in 1773. In 1778, the parish became incorporated as the Town of Ward in 1778, named in honor of the Revolutionary War general Artemes Ward. Later, in 1837, the town was renamed Auburn. Though now largely residential, there was early manufacturing in town, but industry here was soon overshadowed by the neighboring city of Worcester in the late 1800's.

After World War II, Auburn saw most of its agricultural land subdivided and developed for houses, making the town more or less a bedroom community for Worcester and even Boston. These days, the town is not all residential though. There are several shopping malls with retail and other businesses along the highways, and even a few remaining dairy farms. However, for the most part, Auburn is a community of single family homes. Routes 290 and 20 lead in and out of Auburn and the town is located in proximity to The Massachusetts Turnpike Route 90, making it accessible to the neighboring city of Worcester and to Boston, 44 miles east. Worcester also offers residents of Auburn with access to an airport and railroad service.

The architecture of homes in this community indicate the town's colonial history, but the past can also be seen in the old coach station that is has been maintained. The town also features a public library. Another facility for recreation is the Horgan Skating Rink. This town of approximately 15,000 is governed by a five member board of selectmen. There is a full-time police department and a fire department consisting of both full-time and call firefighters.

The local school district includes four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Despite its modest size and sleepy town atmosphere, Auburn offers its residents a quiet suburban community close and readily accessible to the conveniences, economy and attractions of the neighboring city of Worcester.

In July 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Auburn, MA was $283,413. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
