In 2006, a new home was built every ten hours in Wylie, Texas. That's how fast this community in Collin County is growing! In a mere six years, its population has doubled to just over 30,000 residents. Situated 24 miles north of Dallas, Wylie can no longer be considered one of its bedroom communities. It has clearly become a "balanced" city in its own right, combining quality residential living with a healthy business climate.

The city of Wylie was founded in 1886 along the rights-of-way of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe railroads. It was named for Colonel W.D. Wylie, a Santa Fe railroad official and Civil War veteran. It quickly became a prosperous farming community and in the 1930s and 1940s, declared itself the "onion capital of the world."

Onions notwithstanding, Wylie has a lot to be proud. The town boasts an exceedingly low crime rate and an excellent school system. Students attend school through the Wylie Independent School District which currently offers 6 elementary schools, 5 junior/intermediate schools and one high school. Another high school is set to open August 2007.

Many parks and open spaces wind through Wylie creating a relaxing escape. Also, Wylie is just 5 miles away from Lake Lavon. Clearly, the city of Wylie is on the move. New construction dominates, but this community is home to many established neighborhoods filled with rambling ranch homes.

To find Wylie, head north from Dallas on 75. Then, turn east on 190 until you reach State Highway 78 where you'll proceed north. Stop before you hit Lake Lavon!

In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Wylie, TX was $163,993. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
