Most North Texas communities owe their start to a rail line and a cotton gin. Rowlett is no exception. This town was named for Rowlett Creek, a major tributary of the Trinity River's east fork. You could say a river runs through it. Lucky for Rowlett, a lake soon ran through it, also. With the completion of Lake Ray Hubbard in 1971, Rowlett took off. It's bordered on the east and south by the lake and on the west by Rowlett Creek, a true water-lover's paradise.

Rowlett is a city of around 50,000 people. In the next few years, the President George Bush Turnpike will come through the center of town and with it will come enormous commercial and retail development. Dallas Area Rapid Transit will extend its light rail system into downtown Rowlett around the end of the decade. To that end, downtown revitalization is now underway. This quiet, upscale community is about to hit the big time. Housing construction is booming and subdivisions are springing up like bluebonnets.

Rowlett straddles the Dallas and Rockwall county lines, so Rowlett children attend different school systems depending on their county. Dallas County children attend Garland public schools, which operate in the "free choice" arena. That means parents choose which campus their child will attend. Rockwall county children are served by the Rockwall Independent School district.

Rowlett accounts for more than 30 miles of shoreline on Lake Ray Hubbard, so there's no lack of summer fun. The Wet Zone Water Park also has a huge facility in Rowlett. If bermuda shorts are more your summer look, try the Waterview Golf Club, an 18-hole facility voted one of the top ten golf courses in the Dallas area by Texas Golfer Magazine.

In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Rowlett, TX was $143,247. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
