A small town of 2,314 (2004), Wayne straddles both DuPage and Kane Counties. It is located approximately 34 miles west of downtown Chicago, and is largely a residential community with few retail establishments.

Nearby towns include Bartlett, St. Charles, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, and South Elgin. For shopping and entertainment, many residents head out to nearby Bartlett and St. Charles. Villagers can do some shopping at the Charlestown Mall in St. Charles, and in the shopping districts of St. Charles, Bartlett and other nearby communities. The Dunham Woods Riding Club in Wayne offers riding, dining, swimming, and tennis.

In their spare time, villagers can also spend some time at Pratt's Wayne Woods, the largest forest preserve in DuPage County. Located in the County's northwest corner, the preserve's 3,462 acres combine with Illinois Department of Natural Resource land on the north to form a continuous 4,000-acre stretch of land. Many nature lovers take advantage of the savannas, marshes, meadows and wetlands of Wayne Woods to spend some relaxing time.

In terms of education, Wayne has one elementary school, appropriately called Wayne Elementary School. The school, which is situated adjacent to the scenic Illinois Prairie Path, has an active parents' group and offers a Reading Night, that focuses on literacy. Older students receive their educations from School District U-46, which is headquartered in nearby Elgin. As the second largest school district in Illinois, the district has 40 elementary school, eight middle schools and five high schools, and serves almost 40,000 children.

Housing in Wayne consists of moderately-priced residential properties as well as lavish residences. Single-family homes dominate; many are on large lots and have stables and riding trails on their properties. There are moderately-priced ranch-style residences, colonials and two-story houses. Condominiums, townhomes and apartments are scarce. The median age of single-family homes is 27 years.
