It is named after Amos Kendall, who was the editor of the Frankfort, Kentucky newspaper, and went on to be an important advisor to President Andrew Jackson. Kendall became the U.S. Postmaster General in 1835. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, there were 54,544 residents in Kendall County, and the population has increased dramatically since then to 79,514 (2005), making it the third-fastest growing county in the United States. A majority of the population in Kendall County is situated in the north and eastern portions of the county, and along the Fox River; large cities that are located at least partially in Kendall County include Aurora and Joliet. Many new subdivisions have been constructed in Kendall County in recent years. In fact, the organization Protect Kendall Now was created in response to the population boom so that the remaining natural areas of the county could be protected. Southern Kendall County remains a largely agricultural region, with not nearly as much development. The Kendall County Fair and 4-H Show is a popular event that takes place each summer. In 2006, it featured a professional bull riding event, carnival, demolition derby, a dog show and the Kendall County flea market.
