Once a sleepy little lakeside town with dirt roads, farms and small ranch-style homes, the McHenry County village of Lake in the Hills has experienced dramatic growth since the 1990s when developers flocked to the area. With a population of just under 6,000 in 1990, the town now has over 27,000 residents. The village covers 9.6 square miles, and is located one hour northwest of downtown Chicago. Housing includes lower-priced townhomes as well as higher-priced single-family residences located in Boulder Ridge, a golf course community located west of Randall Road, where prices range from $400,000 to $1 million dollars. There are also a number of other subdivisions that have been developed within the past 15 years, including Presidential Park, a group of older homes; Cunat Court, a group of three-story condominiums; Spring Lake Farm, comprised of single-family homes and the Bellchase neighborhood, which contains townhomes, small two-story residences and much larger homes. Current projects underway include the construction of 176 townhomes on the west side of Haligus Road; the construction of 39 single-family homes on the east side of Haligus Road, north of Miller Road; the construction of 13 single-family homes on the east side of Lakewood Road, south of Miller Road; and the building of 114 single-family homes and a parksite on the south side of Ackman Road, east of Lakewood Road.
