Located just off I-80 27 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, the Will County village of Mokena is just minutes away from major highways including I-57, I-294 and I-55. It is situated 30 minutes from Midway Airport, and a Metra train ride into Chicago's Loop takes about an hour. Mokena covers an area of 6 square miles, and it has a population of 24,307. The name, "Mokena" comes from the Algonquin word for turtle. The growth of Mokena in the mid 19th century was similar to many other Chicago suburbs that began as railroad stops. The village became the center of a large farming area, and by 1870, included five general stores, four blacksmith and wagon shops, three hotels, two butcher shops, seven saloons, and a variety of other businesses. When the village incorporated in 1880, its population was 522. Today, located in the heart of Will County, the town of Mokena is one of the fastest growing suburbs in the area. It boasts close proximity to major roads, a small town atmosphere, a range of housing prices, and a number of recreational opportunities. For relaxation, Mokena residents can take advantage of the town's thousands of acres of nature preserves and scenic parks, many of which contain picnic areas and other amenities. Parks include Grasmere Park, which contains a skate park, Green Meadows Park, Hecht Park, McGovney Park, Tinley Gardens Park Buske Park, Willowview Park, and Heritage Park. Villagers can also participate in the many recreational activities offered by the Mokena Community Park District, and visit the newly-constructed Oaks Recreation and Fitness Center, which overlooks the Oaks Disc golf course. The 39,000-square-foot Center features basketball and volleyball courts, over 50pieces of fitness equipment, a dance room, and other amenities. In recent years, new home construction has dramatically increased; Mokena offers a variety of housing styles from which to choose: everything from moderately-priced single-family homes to luxury estate residences. Older housing includes condominiums and townhouses in a wide price range.
