Located south of Frankfort and east of Channahon in Will County, the town of Manhattan lies 37 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, and has a population of approximately 5,100. It is located 30 miles away from Midway Airport, and 38 miles from O'Hare International Airport. Manhattan is also seven miles away from I-80, 11 miles from I-57, and 12 miles from I-55. It covers an area of 3.4 square miles. The village was incorporated in 1886, and since the early 1990s, had experienced consistent growth of 35-45 homes per year. Since 2003, however, Manhattan has averaged about 200 new homes per year, and there are estimates that the number of newly-constructed home in the future will average around 250 units yearly. Students attend various public primary and middle schools in and around Manhattan. Lower-grade public schools include Anna McDonald Elementary School, Wilton Center Elementary School and Manhattan Junior High School. Private primary and middle schools include St. Joseph Elementary School and Christ's Academy, which serves students PK- grade 11. Older students can attend a number of public and private high schools. These include Lincoln-Way Central High School and Peotone High School (public and Catholic Academy and Providence Catholic High School (private). Nine-two percent of Manhattan residents age 25 and older have completed high school or higher; nineteen percent have a bachelor's degree or more. In their leisure time Manhattan residents can check out some books at the Manhattan Public Library, play some golf at one of the many golf courses in nearby New Lenox, or choose an activity or class that's offered by the Manhattan Park District. Options include a junior golf clinic, volleyball camp and horseback riding, and classes in dance, karate, aerobics, stenciling, and other areas.
