Itasca is located in DuPage County, covers 4.9 square miles and lies 24 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, the population is 8,302. Nearby towns include Wood Dale, Elk Grove Village, Bloomingdale, and Roselle. Itasca has a charming downtown area and a small-town atmosphere. The town's most familiar landmark is the Spire, perched on top of what was formerly the Lutheran Church in America, which was built in 1907. Another familiar fixture in Itasca is Spring Brook Nature Center. Opened in 1980 and located just minutes from downtown Itasca, the nature center provides two miles of hiking trails through shady woodland, fragrant prairie and a beautiful cattail marsh. The facility also exhibits birds of prey in its year-round raptor aviary, features a large, indoor aquarium, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, and offers a variety of programs for schools and families. The Itasca Park District oversees eight parks consisting of more than 43 acres. The District also maintains facilities including the village's recreation and fitness center, a waterpark and an historical depot museum. For recreation, residents can also visit the Nordic Hills Country Club and play a round of golf. The Itasca Community Library on Irving Park Road has an extensive collection of books and other items. The village has an assortment of ranch-style homes of brick and cedar construction. Some homes date back to the 1860s.
