Bounded by Irving Park Road, Montrose Avenue, Broadway Avenue, and Clark Street, the Chicago neighborhood of Sheridan Park is technically a sub-neighborhood of Chicago's Uptown community. Sheridan Park is located on the western border of the Uptown area, and was named after a long-gone railroad station. Though the neighborhood was once considered run-down and suffering from a less than stellar reputation, in recent years, it has greatly rebounded, and now includes many desirable residential properties. Property values have risen rapidly, and the amount of renovated properties and new construction has increased dramatically. There is easy access to downtown Chicago and close proximity to Chicago's beaches and other recreational activities. Sheridan Park was named a National Register Historic District in 1985, and features different types of housing and a variety of architectural styles. There are many six-flats and large apartment and condominium buildings; the area also offers numerous large, vintage single-family homes on oversized lots, many with beautiful hardwood trim, fireplaces, built-in sideboards, window benches, and other top-notch features. There are many local spots where residents can spend their leisure time. Foster Avenue Beach and the beach off of Montrose Avenue provide opportunities for sunbathing, fishing, volleyball, walking along the shoreline, and other recreational pursuits. Uptown has a number of small theater companies including the Black Ensemble Theatre on North Beacon Street, and live music can be heard in any number of popular and historic nighttime venues. These include the Green Mill Jazz Club on North Broadway Avenue, the Aragon Ballroom on West Lawrence Avenue, and the Riviera Theatre on North Racine. The historic Uptown Theatre on North Broadway, though currently closed, is a nationally-designated Chicago landmark. Though shut because of deteriorating conditions, in recent years a dedicated group of volunteers has lobbied to have the building restored to its former glory.
