The street is filled with small shops and local institutions representing a broad mix of cultures: everything from meat markets and delis to bookstores and religious institutions. Congregation Bnei Ruven on North Whipple Street is a landmark institution in the West Rogers neighborhood. It has served the Jewish Orthodox community since 1895, when it was first founded in the historic Maxwell Street area. Its distinctive building features a cylindrical shape that's suggestive of a Torah scroll. Today it continues to serve the Chicago Jewish community with a variety of classes, guest speakers and daily religious services.
