Ravenswood is the home of several well-known institutions including the Conrad Sulzer Library and Graceland Cemetery, where many former Chicago captains of industry such as members of the Potter and Pullman families, were laid to rest. It offers ethnic diversity, architectural variety and convenience to downtown Chicago. The Chicago's first planned neighborhood, Ravenswood is bounded by Foster Avenue, Clark Street, Irving Park Road, and the Chicago River. Another Ravenswood institution is the Old Town School of Folk Music on North Lincoln Avenue. Founded in 1957 by the late folk musician Win Stracke, the school offers a broad range of classes in guitar, banjo, fiddle, percussion, songwriting, multi-track recording, voice, and more. There are also dance classes such as tango, salsa, tap, and Mexican folkloric dance, and performances featuring national and international folk artists. Ravenswood is a family neighborhood known for its vintage buildings, and is a community where in recent years, many structures have been rehabbed and rehabilitated rather than torn down. The East Ravenswood Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and features beautiful Victorian homes, brick and greystone two and three-flats, and apartments that have been converted into condominiums. The area is roughly bounded by Irving Park, Lawrence Avenue, Clark Street, and Ravenswood Avenue. The price of residential real estate in Ravenswood has risen steadily in recent years. The most expensive housing in the community lies north of the Conrad Sulzer Library. An advantage of living in Ravenswood is its convenient transportation. The CTA's Ravenswood line makes a number of stops in the area, and Metra's Union Pacific trains stop at Lawrence and Ravenwood Avenues. A number of CTA buses also provide transportation to the area. Ravenswood has numerous parks that provide recreational opportunities for its residents. Baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and playgrounds are available, and access to Chicago's beautiful lakefront is a short distance away via public transportation.
