University Village is part of Chicago's Near West Side, which is located west of the Kennedy-Dan Ryan-Eisenhower expressways interchange. It houses some major hospital complexes, the Chicago Technology Park and a wide variety of restaurants.
The region is also home to some art galleries, Harpo Studios where Oprah tapes her television show, and the United Center where the Chicago Bulls play basketball. The historic Jane Addams Hull House also stands on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. The Near West Side boasts excellent transportation. The Dan Ryan Expressway is close by, and the Congress-Douglas-O'Hare CTA trains serve the needs of students and other commuters.
University Village is a relatively new community whose development originated in 1994 with the teardown of the historic Maxwell Street open air market. Bounded by Western Avenue, Roosevelt Road, Monroe Street, and the Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways, University Village consists of the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, the West Side Medical Center, many new restaurants and retail establishments, and thousands of new housing units including student housing, luxury townhomes and loft residences, renovated vintage rowhouses and two-flats.
The main entrance to University Village is graced by a fountain, and the neighborhood also contains tree-lined streets, expansive landscaping and three new parks. The neighborhood is just minutes away from the stores, restaurants, museums and other attractions of downtown Chicago. In addition, the neighborhoods of Little Italy and Greektown are just minutes away; both contain a wide assortment of casual and upscale dining spots.
Within the University Village community sits a variety of major grocery stores, banks, restaurants, coffee establishments, bookstores, and other retail establishments. The CTA's Blue Line train makes a stop at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, the CTA Orange Line trains stops on Halsted Street, and various CTA bus lines also serve the community.
