Sitting adjacent to Midway Airport, the community is intersected by Archer Avenue, and the Stevenson Expressway is nearby. One of the 77 official community areas of Chicago, Garfield Ridge is also close to the starting point for the CTA's Orange Line, which connects the Southwest Side to Chicago's downtown area. There are also a number of CTA bus routes which service the community. The current population of Garfield Ridge is 36,101 (2000)
The multi-ethnic community contains a number of Chicago public schools including Kinzie, Byrne and Mark Twain Elementary Schools, and Kennedy High School. There are also a large number of parochial schools in the area. In their spare time, Garfield Ridge residents can relax at the numerous Chicago parks which service the community; these include Wentworth Park, Valley Forge Park, Vittum Park, and Stars and Stripes Park. In their leisure time, villagers can also visit the modern 8,000-square foot Garfield Ridge Library at Archer and Mulligan Avenues, eat at the 8,000-square-foot Home Run Inn Pizza restaurant at Archer and Meade Avenues, or head out to any of the shopping plazas surrounding Midway Airport.
Architecturally, the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, along with other Southwest Side communities, is one of the most architecturally distinctive neighborhoods in the country. It sports a mix of historic bungalows, lavish Victorian homes, ranch-style residences, and many other styles of housing. Teardowns and new-home construction is common in Garfield Ridge.
