South of Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood lies the bustling community of Wicker Park. In 1870, it was named after the Wicker brothers, Charles and Joel, who purchased 80 acres of land along Milwaukee Avenue, that was developed for people of all socio-economic levels. The community has become especially trendy in recent years, attracting hordes of young people, and sporting hip new restaurants, boutiques, bars, art galleries, and musical venues. Wicker Park was the setting of a 2004 film by the same name. The heart of the Wicker Park neighborhood is at Damen and Milwaukee Avenues. The boundaries of the community are Division Street, Bloomingdale Avenue, and Ashland and Western Avenues. Housing runs the gamut from inexpensive lofts to beautifully-renovated townhomes. There are also historic landmark mansions, modern low-rise buildings, and Queen Anne, Italianate, Gothic and Romanesque-style residences. Condominiums are also scattered throughout the neighborhood. Transportation in the Wicker Park neighborhood is plentiful. Residents commute to their jobs in downtown Chicago via a number of CTA buses, and the Blue Line (O'Hare-Congress-Douglas Line) elevated train. The Kennedy Expressway is located just east of Wicker Park, and O'Hare International Airport is a short distance away. In their spare time, Wicker Park residents can walk to many entertainment and dining venues in the neighborhood. There are a number of clubs like the famous Double Door on Milwaukee Avenue that hosts live performances of jazz, blues and rock. Dining options are casual as well as upscale, and include a variety of cuisines including Italian, vegetarian, Middle Eastern, and Asian fare. Each fall, the Wicker Park neighborhood hosts the well-attended Around the Coyote Arts Festival. The weekend event features 60 local art studios, a dozen or so galleries, as well as film and dance performances and children's programs.
