Mooseheart is located south of Batavia, and north of North Aurora on the Fox River Valley, about 38 miles west of Chicago. Other nearby towns include Elburn, Aurora, Sugar Grove, and Geneva. It is a self-contained community established by the Loyal Order of the Moose in 1913 to care for orphaned children or others in need. The current student population is about 250. The primary focus of the community is Mooseheart Child City and School, a neighborhood that contains 100 buildings and tree-lined streets situated on 1,000 acres of Illinois farmland. The young people and staff from Mooseheart Child City and School live in one of thirty single-family residences on the property. Dedicated in 1913 by the Moose fraternal organization, Mooseheart Child City and School cares for children who are unable, for any number of reasons, to receive care from their parents. Some children have lost one or both parents; other children may be living in environments that are not conducive to their healthy growth and development. In addition to the 30 single-family residences located in Mooseheart, the village has its own schools, a cathedral, a farm, a village center, a post office, and its own utilities. Children attend Mooseheart School, which provides instruction in grades pre-kindergarten through age 12 and is located on James. J. Davis Drive. Mooseheart is located in Kane County, whose county seat is Geneva, Illinois. As of 2000, the population of Kane County was 404,119. It covers an area of 524 square miles, and its largest cities (St. Charles, Geneva) are located along the Fox River. Kane County was formed out of La Salle County in 1836, and was named in honor of Elias Kane, United States Senator from Illinois and the first Illinois Secretary of State. In their spare time, Kane County residents can visit the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles and find antiques, collectibles and crafts, or cheer on the Kane County Cougars, a Class A minor league baseball team affiliated with Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics. The team plays at Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, and draws large crowds from throughout the Chicagoland area.
