A small community on the verge of big things, Rhome is about 30 minutes northwest of Fort Worth in southeastern Wise County. The city is at the crossroads of State Highway 114, US-287, and US-81.

The community that became Rhome was established in the late 1850s by a group of Missourians. Previously named Prairie Point, the area boasted a hotel, a school, and several businesses, and was the second largest settlement in Wise County. Indian attacks and bandits caused the population to dwindle, however, and Prairie Point was virtually deserted by 1863. The arrival of railway tracks in the early 1880s, however, resurrected the community, and it was rechristened Rhome, in honor of Col. Byron Crandall Rhome, a prominent local rancher who was credited with bringing the first Hereford cattle to Wise County.

Rhome saw slow but steady growth throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries. By 1988, it was a bedroom community for commuters to Fort Worth. Its 2000 population of 551 had grown to 866 by mid-2005. Contributing to the city's population growth is the nearby Texas Motor Speedway, which brings race fans from throughout the country. It's also a quick drive to the museums, shopping, and other attractions in Fort Worth.

Rhome schoolchildren attend Northwest ISD, which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing school districts in the state. Covering more than 232 square miles and 13 communities, Northwest ISD currently serves about 10,000 students, but is expected to have as many as 44,000 students by the year 2022.

Home buyers can choose from reasonably priced homes in the low to mid-100s in lake-front gated communities, as well as $1 million-plus estates and undeveloped acreage. According to the 2000 census, the median household income in Rhome was $40,667 and the median home value was $81,800.
