Ferris, Texas sits along Interstate 45 just south of Dallas and 15 miles Northeast of Waxahachie in Ellis County. It's a quiet little community of over 2,000 people that got its start as a stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1874. The citizens named their new town after the aptly named Judge Justus Ferris of Waxahachie.

The town was well situated. The mineral clays found in the soil provided Ferris with a lasting industry, brick manufacturing. In fact, Ferris likes to call itself "the brick capital of the nation." Bricks and agriculture continue to dominate the local economy.

Life takes a slow pace in Ferris. Ferris thrives as a small town, one that Sheriff Andy Griffith would be proud of. Community pride runs long and deep. Ferris has its own newspaper, "The Ellis County Press," covering general news and it has its own school system, the Ferris Independent School District. Some children outside of Ferris city limits, though, attend school through the Dallas ISD. The schools are well maintained and attractive.

For fun, Ferris offers Shadow Creek Ranch in Old Fort Dallas. Here, you step back in time to 1880s Texas. From the lighted wooden boardwalks to the casino, the 28 buildings have been faithfully reproduced to create the atmosphere of early Texas history. For more contemporary fun, check into the Old Brickyard Golf Course on the grounds of Shadow Creek Ranch. The Old Brickyard is an 18-hole championship course with driving range and practice areas.
