The upscale Chicago neighborhood of DePaul is located just west of Lincoln Park, and is the home of DePaul University. Founded by the Catholic Vincentian Fathers in 1898, and named after the 17th century French priest, Saint Vincent de Paul, the 30-acre university has expanded in recent years and now accommodates more than 23,000 students.
DePaul is the largest Catholic university in the nation and the largest private institution in Chicago. Its Chicago campus lies just south of Fullerton Avenue between Halsted Street and Seminary Avenue, and is the oldest and largest of its eight locations. The university has undergone a building boom in recent years, with the construction of a number of dormitories, a new student center and the $25 million John T. Richardson Library, which was built in 1992.
The boundaries of the entire DePaul neighborhood include Fullerton Avenue on the north, Armitage Avenue on the south, Halsted Street on the east and Racine Avenue on the west. Young professionals and students can choose from a large selection of coffeehouses, antique stores, bookstores, and upscale boutique shops that dot the community, and a lively nightlife scene offers a variety of music clubs, bars and trendy restaurants along Lincoln Avenue.
A 14,000-square foot branch of the Chicago Public Library at Fullerton and Racine Avenues provides an extensive collection of materials; neighboring Lincoln Park, just a few blocks away, offers further leisure time activities for area residents.
The DePaul neighborhood sports distinctive single-family and multiple-unit housing, that's similar to that found in nearby Lincoln Park and Old Town. It boasts numerous restored brownstones, original old Chicago row houses and newer homes designed by many of Chicago's well-known architects. Prices are higher than average for most of these properties.
