Legend has it that the city derived its name from that very statement. Apparently, a famous actor stepped off a train and exclaimed "My, what a grand prairie!" and so it stuck.

The city is grand with its vast offering of activities in the area. The city is primarily served by the Grand Prairie Independent School District; a 58-square mile district serving more than 23,000 students within the Dallas County portion of Grand Prairie. The district boasts 36 campuses, including 23 elementary schools, seven middle schools, two ninth grade centers, two high schools and two alternative education schools. The District is one of the biggest employers in the city with more than 2,900 staff members.

Today, Grand Prairie is 81 square miles and is ideally located between Dallas and Fort Worth. An estimated 156,000 people call Grand Prairie home. In 2006, the average age of residents was 32, the average household income $62,974, and the average value of a new home was $203,000.
