Historic. Progressive. Diverse. One of the oldest settlements in North Texas, the city of Desoto is now a progressive community, rich in diversity and the cultural arts. In 1847, just eleven years after Texas won its independence from Mexico, families first settled in the area. In 1881, a post office was established and the settlement was given the name of DeSoto in honor of Dr. Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a beloved doctor dedicated to the community. In 1949, with approximately 400 residents, the city of Desoto became the nineteenth organized municipality in Dallas County. This early farming community has been cultivated into a thriving city with fine housing, friendly neighborhoods, good schools, updated parks, restaurants, and shopping.

Located in the southwest corner of Dallas County, Desoto's population now reaches almost 50,000. The DeSoto Independent School District has eleven campuses and is rated Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency. They include five elementary, two intermediate, two junior high, a high school, and freshman campus. Two additional areas in Desoto are served by the Duncanville Independent School District and the Dallas Independent School District.

The parks in Desoto offer various outdoor activities and facilities including wooded trails, modern playgrounds, athletic fields, and more. The Windmill Hill Nature Preserve has 75 acres of hiking along beautiful trails. Located in the Town Center, the Recreation Center offers citizens a variety of opportunities to have fun and stay in shape. Facilities include two competition-grade gymnasiums, an indoor walking and jogging track, three racquetball courts, and a full weight room and fitness center.

The city's parks and recreation department is active within the community and sponsors many annual family-oriented events such as the Daughter-Daddy Valentine Dance, Easter Egg Hunt, Viva Desoto, and the Annual Juneteenth Celebration.
