Located just outside the Baltimore City limits in Baltimore County, Essex is an affordable, water view community that is currently undergoing a massive state-sponsored revitalization. Although the area was once dominated by apartment complexes, beginning in the late 1990's most of these older buildings were demolished and replaced with parks, single family home communities, and modern shopping centers.

Today, the town of Essex features a variety of housing options, from luxury condominiums, contemporary townhouses, 1950's era brick row houses, and single family homes. In addition to its close proximity to Baltimore's downtown business district, with easy access via I-695, Essex is just minutes from the growing corporate and commercial hub of White Marsh.

Established in 1909 as a place for working class Baltimore city residents to build new homes on inexpensive and relatively rural land, Essex soon experienced a population boom due to the success of the Glen L. Martin Company, which was based in Essex. Today known as Lockheed-Martin, the aerospace technology company continues to employ many Essex residents, who enjoy an easy commute in their own neighborhood.

As Essex continues to improve, real estate developers have taken notice of the town's unique appeal as a convenient and affordable water view community. New planned communities, with residential districts, shopping centers, and supermarkets contained within the neighborhoods create an ease of living and enhance the changing Essex landscape.

Due to the Maryland state-sponsored revitalization of "power zones" within Essex, more and more people are looking to purchase a home in the convenient and distinctive town. It's location in the county gives Essex residents access to one of the state's best school systems, which includes Eastern Tech public high school, a competitive and prestigious magnet program and Maryland State Blue Ribbon award winner. With an affordable median sale price, Essex is a smart and affordable place for first time buyers to call home.

In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Essex, MD was $210,831. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
