Boston's West End is a tiny, now defunct neighborhood between the Massachusetts General Hospital complex and Beacon Hill. The neighborhood was once home to 7000 residents, mostly Jewish and Italian immigrants, but urban renewal initiatives during the 1950's leveled the neighborhood. Room was then made for the hospital to expand and for the construction of luxury high rise apartments, most notably Charles River Park. Besides the hospital, and Charles River Park, the other major presence in this former neighborhood is North Station and the Boston Garden, the famous sports and concert venue that is home to The Boston Celtics. Facing North Station and the Garden is a busy commercial street, Causeway Street, lined with fast food restaurants and sports bars. Also adjacent to the West End is Storrow Drive, a major highway though Boston, and some open-space park along the Charles River that is a popular run for joggers.
