Steeped rich in history, Oak Cliff was once a town located in Dallas County. However, it was annexed by the city of Dallas in 1903, but remains one of Dallas' oldest established neighborhoods. At that time, Oak Cliff had a population of 3,630.

In 1963, Oak Cliff became a part of one of American history's darkest days. On November 22, after assassinating President John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald took a bus into Oak Cliff. There, he murdered Officer J.D. Tippet, fled into the Texas Theater on Jefferson Boulevard, and was captured.

During the 1980s, in many of the older Oak Cliff neighborhoods such as Winnetka Heights, and Kessler Park, a new population of "urban pioneers" began to move into North Oak Cliff. They renovated a number of the houses from the 1920s and 1930s that had suffered from neglect. Over the past decade, the Oak Cliff area has continued renovation plans throughout the neighborhood including the historic Texas Theater, the old Oak Cliff Bank Building (Now Bank of America), as well as spurring new retail growth along Fort Worth Avenue and Cockrell Hill.

The neighborhoods in Oak Cliff offer residents an eclectic blend of housing options including some of the most beautiful turn of the century and mid-20th century homes. Additionally, the many beautiful parks and the remarkably close proximity to the central business district of downtown Dallas serve as an allure for residents seeking an alternative to the northern suburbs.

Oak Cliff (the original area) has been experiencing some revitalization in recent years with middle class professionals (many of whom work in downtown Dallas and other north Dallas neighborhoods) finding Oak Cliff an affordable and convenient alternative to other Dallas neighborhoods such as the "M Streets", Lakewood and the Greenville Avenue corridor, which have become more expensive since the 1990's.

The Dallas Independent School District serves the neighborhoods of Oak Cliff. Additionally, two private high schools reside in the area including Bishop Dunne Catholic School and Tyler Street Christian Academy.

Notorious residents from Oak Cliff include blues guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughan, singer Edie Brickell, and Lee Harvey Oswald.
