The hometown of Olympic gymnast Bart Conner, the Cook County suburb of Morton Grove was the first community in the United States to pass an ordinance restricting the private possession of handguns within the village. Bordered by Glenview, Niles and Skokie, it is located 15 miles north of downtown Chicago, 20 minutes from O'Hare International Airport, and it covers five square miles. The population of Morton Grove is 22,705 (2003). In terms of its housing stock, Morton Grove consists of bungalows and two-flats built 60 to more than 100 years ago, as well as newer ranch-style homes and split-level residences constructed after World War II. The Mortonaire section of town contains pricier single-family colonial, modern ranch-style and two-story homes. Older and newer luxury townhouses are also available, and there are plenty of apartments. For shopping, residents can visit the stores at Prairie View Plaza, Village Plaza and Highland Plaza. They can also head on over to Old Orchard shopping center in Skokie to do some of their shopping. The expansive outdoor mall contains several large anchor stores (Macy's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's), as well as a number of smaller shops, a variety of dining spots, and movie theatres. For recreation, villagers can enjoy the numerous activities and programs offered by the Morton Grove Park District. The District owns and maintains ten facilities including two outdoor pools, a museum, four field houses, a 50,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art community center, and 13parks totaling 67 acres. The Edens Expressway and Tri-State Tollway are near by. To reach downtown Chicago, commuters can board a Metra train in town; the ride takes around 30 minutes.
