Located just outside Columbia in popular Howard County, Simpsonville is a suburb centrally located between the major metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington DC. Typical of Howard County, most homes in Simpsonville have been built since the mid 20th century. Still, a variety of housing styles can be found, from large luxury brick new constructions to more modest traditionally styled cottages and two story homes with covered front porches.

As one of the last counties formed in Maryland, Howard County remained largely rural up until the 20th century. A few areas including Simpsonville, however, experienced minor success in the milling industry during the mid to late 19th century, thanks to the Patapsco River, which powered industrial workshops. Unlike many of its neighboring towns, Simpsonville has a number of intriguing older buildings. In fact, Simpsonville is home to the most important historical site in all of Howard County, the Simpsonville Stone Ruins. Today, the former village for the mill community is now the subject of study by prominent American archaeologists.

The town of 15,000 people is situated adjacent to the Clarksville Environmental Area, assuring residents for generations to come that Simpsonville will maintain its unique pastoral beauty. Just a short drive away from Simpsonville is the large suburb of Columbia, with seemingly endless options for dining, shopping, recreation, and culture. The spacious and upscale Mall in Columbia, which features over 230 stores, is a popular shopping destination that draws Marylanders from surrounding counties and the town's 120 restaurants offer an eclectic range of cuisines to satisfy even the pickiest eater. In addition, the famed Merriweather Post Pavilion attracts internationally acclaimed musical acts and entertainers to Columbia each summer.

Residents of Simpsonville enjoy the benefits of their inclusion in the Howard County Public School System. Consistently ranked as the best in the state, the Howard County Public Schools have received innumerable awards at the state level. While their public elementary and secondary schools are top notch, Simpsonville is also near the Columbia based satellite campuses of two of Maryland's best universities: Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College of Maryland.
