Established in the mid-1800s by Chinese immigrants who worked for the railroad, North Highlands began as bedroom communities habituated by workers. The neighboring communities of North Highlands and Antelope in Sacramento County share not only communities but also a rich history. Back in this time the residents thrived and enjoyed their boomtown in an era where neighborhoods were the essence of the community. However, due to the fact that this area was not a central location for commerce, the workers eventually moved to the next county and helped establish what is now known today as Roseville.

Today North Highlands is still the bedroom community of old, however unlike the railroad workers who played cards on Poker Lane, the residents now commute to Roseville, Sacramento, Davis and the Bay Area. Centrally located just ten minutes from downtown Sacramento, North Highlands has maintained some of its rural charm and is still a place where housing lots border cattle-land.

Located on the northeastern border of Sacramento County, this community is conveniently situated near freeways, shopping, neighborhood parks and the Sacramento International Airport. Because the development is relatively new, homes in the area are energy-efficient and neighborhoods are well planned. A variety of national builders have chosen to invest in this area providing a large number of high-quality master-planned homes in affordable communities.

North Highlands is part of the San Juan Unified School District – a widespread and well-known district for its award-winning schools and quality education.

North Highlands is also situated just ten miles away from Folsom and the many recreational amenities of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area which offers water skiing, sailing, swimming and fishing and is one of the most visited locations in the California State Park system. There is also a campground at the Beal’s Point access, which has a boat ramp, beach and picnic area.

Just ten miles away from downtown Sacramento, North Highlands is a short drive away from a variety of family-friendly destinations including the famous Sacramento Zoo, in addition to the state Capitol, California State Railroad Museum and a wide variety of sophisticated shopping and fine dining choices. North Highlands is conveniently located less than an hour and a half away from the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area and Reno, Nevada, which offer residents great opportunities for day trips, outdoor recreation and a rich cultural and entertainment venues.
