Cox family moved to Lake Alfred and obtained two 40 acre citrus groves that the citrus age began in Lake Alfred and the city saw its first real growth.

The city was named Lake Alfred in 1913 after the large lake in the area. Today, a serene bedroom community for commuters to Orlando and Tampa, Lake Alfred is also a town with its own businesses including a mix of traditional retail and service industries as well as many specialty businesses. Lake Alfred also has a very popular antique shopping area.

The area around Interstate 4 in Lake Alfred has been approved for environmentally friendly subdivisions to be built. Several new residential developments are already being constructed inside the city limits, while Lake Alfred’s older neighborhoods have recently received some special attention with new sidewalks, paths, and street lights that encourage walking to nearby restaurants, shops, and parks.
