Haines City offers many opportunities to get to know your neighbors through youth sports such as basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, football, cheerleading, and little league; two community swimming pools; numerous lakes that are great for water sports including fishing. The Haines City Parks and Recreation Department has many programs for residents including ceramics, clogging, cribbage, karate, line dancing, a walker’s club, a preschool play group, a book club, and so much more.
This warm Central Florida location has many outdoor festivities including a monthly Bike Fest and Cruise In to show off your classic rides; a yearly Easter egg hunt and Haines City’s very own 4th of July spectacular known as “Thunder on the Ridge” that has musical entertainment, foods, crafts, children’s games, and, breathtaking fireworks. Haines City has an abundance of shopping and restaurants close to home.
Haines City has a “juicy” history, in citrus that is. The fertile soils and Florida sunshine have created a huge citrus industry that goes back several generations in this area. Haines City has been a pioneer in citrus production including being the first to bottle grapefruit juice and being the first to experiment with developing frozen citrus concentrate. While the sweet smell of orange blossoms are still throughout Haines City, many orange groves are making way for Haines City’s new top economic producer, tourism.
Based so close to the magic of the Orlando theme parks, Haines City is experiencing large growth that can be seen in the many new subdivisions that are located where orange trees once stood. Haines City’s schools are part of Polk County Public Schools with numerous schools located throughout the city; private religious schools are also available in Haines City. In the fall of 2009, the University of South Florida will be building a satellite campus just 15 miles west of Haines City and will offer applied technology programs.
