This area was first settled 300 years ago by Jesuits. In Sasabe, at the Rancho de la Osa, the first building ever to be built in Arizona is said to stand, complete with a cannonball shot into its walls by Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution.
From Sasabe you can see the Kitt Peak observatory far away on the hills in the distance, a little over 50 miles from Tucson. The homes here range from mobile and modular homes to ranch style, all surrounded by land. The area is very rural and remote. At night, thousands of stars are visible due to the absence of city lights.
The elevation here makes the nights a little cooler and the days more bearable than Tucson, making it easier to enjoy the wildlife outdoors. Hiking, bird and wildlife watching are popular activities in this area, as it's filled with long-eared rabbits, deer, prong horns, Indian ruins and hiking trails.
Because of its location south of Tucson, Sasabe has the benefits and drawbacks of being a border town. Border towns in Arizona face many unique political and environmental problems, including immigrant issues, debates over walls, fences and border security. However, it's also close to Nogales, Mexico and it's shopping and restaurants, and within a few hours of Rocky Point, a nearby beach resort and popular Spring Break spot.
