Almost one hundred and twenty years ago, Kerman was just a watering tank and pump sitting along the rails of the prolific Southern Pacific Railroad. The town quickly grew after the installation of the tank and pump and hasn’t slowed since. Between 1990 and 2000, the city grew an amazing 57%, more than the percentage growth in any other city in Fresno County. Business and commercial development followed close behind; business expansion projects have ensured that the city’s growth is diversified among numerous industries. Without a doubt, the city retains a certain agricultural prowess like many of the cities in the Central Valley; Kerman’s strengths lie in the production of cotton and grapes.

Near the southern end of the city, sits an oval shaped park shaded under the leaves of nearly hundred year old palm trees. The park has sat, undisturbed by modern revitalization efforts since before 1910. A new clock face and wrought iron fencing are responsible for giving the park an aesthetic face lift, but for the most part, the park retains the same beauty and quality it had on the day of its grand opening.

Residents investment in their community is apparent; it’s not uncommon to see many of the locals in red attire on game days in support of their home team. Murals commemorate the city’s historical moments: a steamboat’s passage through the San Joaquin River at the first part of the 20th century; the city’s role as a watering station for the railroad.

Kerman is served by the Kerman Unified School District. Recent construction on the high school has afforded the community a new pool; students enjoy a newly constructed library.

In the middle of the warm summer, the city hosts a July 4th celebration. Residents, young and old alike, watch as fireworks light the sky. As the summer draws to a close, residents gather to celebrate at the annual Harvest Festival. The celebration draws the entire community; the community’s celebrate the season’s productive harvest as they enjoy food, commercial booths and activities. The Pageantry of Lights parade marks the end of the year and the beginning of the Christmas season.

Housing development is at an all-time high- new developments like the Park Avenue Estates, Boyd Estates, Holland-Spino Estates, and Capistrano Homes offer a variety of residential options. The most popular building sites overlook the beautiful San Joaquin River, shaded by the expansive vegetation growing riverside. Boat docks, private beaches and expansive land are among the greatest benefits of rural living.
In June 2008, the average price of a single family home or condo in Kerman was $179,000. This information is gathered from MLS sources, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.
