Delano embraces cultural diversity evidenced by the city motto, “An International Community Working Together;” residents say that despite varying origins, whether it be national or international, they are tied together with a strong sense of community.

The second largest city in Kern County, Delano is located just thirty miles north of Bakersfield. The close proximity affords the city of Delano with the convenience of urban living, without any of the drawbacks. The population within the city has grown a great deal over the last decade, experiencing a 36% growth rate since 2000.

Delano serves as the central shipping location for the Sears Company, and is also home to other industrial companies, like Paramount Citrus Packing. The city is served by the Delano Unified School District. Delano houses the only Educational Complex in the area. The complex houses an elementary school and junior high school and will soon house over 2,000 students; the facilities also accommodate a multipurpose building, a library and a shared kitchen. The school district has a number of other changes in the works in an effort to ensure modernization. Over 1,000 students work towards their associate degree at the Delano Center, a satellite campus for Bakersfield College.

Community leadership and cohesiveness is apparent. Residents work together to discuss community issues like education, entertainment venues, etc. Consistent with its diverse population, the city’s festivals and events showcase the city’s cultural strengths. The Cinco De Mayo Fiesta begins with an expansive BBQ dinner and is followed by a parade and carnival. Children and the “young at heart” look forward to this annual event with great anticipation. Philippine Weekend marks the crowning of the festival’s King and Queen. For over thirty-three years, the celebration has brought the community together. The combination of ethnic food, dancing and activities delight residents; singing contests and a basketball tournament ensure that every visitor will be entertained. Over four autumn days, the city celebrates the season with the Harvest Holiday Festival, which includes a carnival, food and craft booths and junior livestock show.

Residents enjoy sampling the local dining faire; among local favorites, is El Delfin Restaurant, which serves the highly acclaimed “Del Mar Enchiladas.” Also among local favor is the “Taco Factory,” a small but tasty dining experience that serves up tacos at incredible affordable prices.

Affordable housing and numerous citywide home buyer assistance programs ensure that residents have access to the many real estate options available in Delano. Rural and urban living options abound; close proximity to surrounding towns opens up employment opportunities while limiting commute time.

In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Delano was $182,744. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
