Bluff Springs is located in Travis County between Austin and Buda. The first post office opened in Bluff Springs in 1853 and William S. Smith was the postmaster. The community grew with the slow introduction of a steam grist mill, a cotton gin, a church and a district school and by the late 1880s the community of Bluff Springs thrived. As with most small towns of the day, Bluff Springs faltered and the community slowly diminished with the discontinuation of the post office in 1902. In the 1930s and 1940s Bluff Springs remained a small community with few businesses. Today Bluff Springs has made a full recovery and has encountered tremendous growth.
Bluff Springs children attend Austin Independent School District. The district has over 82,000 students who attend 110 campuses. The district is widely acclaimed for it's diverse population and academic programs that aid the many nationalities that attend Austin ISD schools. The district offers programs and special education programs that allow all students to thrive and excel. In addition to a thriving school population the campuses themselves strive to exceed standards set in place by the state of Texas and the district is succeeding. The parents are an important part of the Austin ISD learning process and their help and input is valued. The cooperation between community, parents and faculty has created a harmonious learning environment and the rewards are well rounded and successful students.
The population of Bluff Springs has grown from just 50 residents in 2000 to well over 6,500 today and is continuing to grow as new home builders are developing the area in and around Bluff Springs. The median price for a home these days in Bluff Springs is a little over $200,000 and the cost of living is lower than the state average. Residents are enjoying continuing growth and home prices are rising slowly but steadily. Because most housing in Bluff Springs is less than 10 years old the area has a modern and updated feel while still retaining that small town community atmosphere. Shopping and dining is scattered throughout the area and the commute to Austin is a short one. Enjoy all that Bluff Springs and Austin have to offer.
