Pflugerville was established when William Bohls opened a general store and post office in his home in 1860. William decided the town should be named after the first settler to the area, a German immigrant by the name of Henry Pfluger. Pfluger first settled near Austin on 160 acres but later traded this land for a farm only two miles from present day Pflugerville. The community declined during the Great Depression but started to grow again in the 1960s. The town of Plugerville was incorporated in 1965.
Schools in the area are part of the Pflugerville Independent School District. The district educates almost 20,000 students at 26 area campuses. The Pflugerville ISD strives to make the learning experience of its students both enjoyable and enriching. The parents of Plugerville ISD students are encouraged to take an active roll in their children's education and this participation is both valued and welcomed and many times an integral part of a child's education. The district as a whole meets Texas state educational requirements while several campuses are excelling with ratings of recognized and exemplary. The district continues to implement new learning tools to enrich the learning environment of every Pflugerville ISD student.
